Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
