RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
