Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
