The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
